Precipitous Decline

133 ... 89 ... 81 ... 61 ... the mileage from August to November. It's not looking good. Miles are declining and weight is climbing. I'm not sticking to the plan. In fact, I'm doing just the opposite.

Instead of averaging 23.2 miles per week (or 3.3 miles per day), it has been 3, 24, 18 and 16 miles for a 15.25 weekly average in November. However, that first week was before I enacted the new plan. Discounting that week, it has been 19.33 miles per week -- still short no matter which way you count it.

Thanksgiving was a success. Other than that, November was not a great month. It seems I've been fighting off a cold every other week. The weather has conspired against me. The beers have been too tasty. The whiskey has kept me too warm. It has been too easy to just say no to drugs running.

I don't feel like suiting up. I do feel lame.

There are 31 days left. Running 3.75 miles per day will get me to 1,000 for the year.

1,000 Tracker: 116 miles to go.
Fall Tracker: The best way not to fall during a run is to not run.

A Recap of Viper's Thanksgiving Day Running and Beveraging Plan:
  1. Ran 5.7 miles
  2. Showered and groomed, maintaining lout-nicity
  3. Ate an English muffin with jam, but forewent the breakfast beer due to time constraints and pesky laws prohibiting drinking alcohol while driving
  4. Enjoyed a glass of Metaxa and Christmas Ales with some appetizers; a glass of Johnnie Walker Red Label just before feasting
  5. Killed some bird, stuffing, mashed taters, green bean casserole, candied yams, Brussels sprouts, cranberry and apple Jell-O, and a slice each of pecan and pumpkin pie; along with a glass of Pinot Grigio with dinner, another glass of Johnnie Walker with the pecan pie, and another Christmas Ale with the pumpkin pie
  6. More Christmas Ale was the digestive agent with slumped-in-chair conversating, until ...
  7. An early bedtime

"And the beer I had for breakfast wasn't bad, so I had one more for dessert."

I know you are adamantly anti-treadmill, but is there an indoor track you can use?

Also, is it sad that I've never had candied yams before? Don't answer that.

no breakfast beer on Thanksgiving?!? Who am I role-model my alcohol consumption after if you're going to be a quitter?

Just FYI: I have one last chance - this coming Saturday - to shave my 5K rather than grow its beard. I may fail again - which will give you more to laugh about - but I'll take comfort in the knowledge that, come 12:00:01 a.m. January 1, I'll be able to come here and taunt you for not having met your goal of running 1000 miles in 2008.

And if, at that time, you are still fighting your cold, or have succumbed to it entirely ... well, that'll just be gravy.

Gravy and icing: It mutates into an illness that causes projectile vomiting.

how do you figure excuses are like nipples? like you use them until they are sucked dry then you move on to another nip... i mean excuse?
I don't know if you've realized this yet but if one day you go out for a 8 mile run then you'd be able to take the next day of for a booze induced recovery; better yet go for a 12 mile run and you could start a bender!

You can totally get to 1000 for the year!

With all that alcohol in your bloodstream, I'm surprised viruses have been able to live at all!

Good luck on your continued quest to 1,000. Right now, it is your Everest.

Oh, come on, running with a hangover is good for you! Or better yet, set up a beer stop at home and do some loops and drink while you run. Beer=carbs after all LOL.

beer, it's not just for breakfast anymore. but that doesn't make it a bad idea.

push it some, and you can totally get to 1000 miles on the year. throw in a few long days, and you'll get there.

With your post title, I thought I was about to read your life bio.

I know how you feel! November was a terrible mileage month for me, and I've been really sick. It has been way too easy to embrace the hard cider and ignore the marathon in May.

Don't be so hard on yourself. You ran more than I did in November and I'm in the middle of marathon training.
