Hotsy Tootsies

Friday afternoon, I got home early and went out for a barefoot four-miler. The only problem was that it was near 80 degrees and sunny all day, and the sidewalks and roads were quite hot.

It didn't seem so bad at first, but by the time I was past my failsafe point, my soles were starting to feel tender -- no matter how fast I lifted my feet. The results were a few walk breaks, aiming for shady spots and cool grass, and finally having to walk it in the last quarter mile because I just couldn't take it anymore.

Part of the reason I love running is because it is a good way to find my physical limits. Guess what? Found one!

Learning experience: Hot surfaces are hot.

In the future, I'll limit my barefootery to morning runs or less hot days (though I'm not sure where my threshold is yet, other than somewhere below 80 degrees).

My feet feel fine today, but the tenderness kept me from wanting to run this weekend. Not to mention the busy Father's Day/belated birthday celebrations that kept the schedule pretty full.

Today, I brought my running clothes to work, so I'll be getting a few miles in barring torrential storms, which are possible. At any rate, I'll be wearing foot coverings.

Make sure you remember that for Dobson (hot surfaces are hot), and don't take him on too long of walks!

You know what could have prevented your feet from getting burned by the pavement? Shoes.

Hot surfaces are hot. Truer words were never spoken. except possibly the following:

blue skies are blue
frozen water is frozen
green cups are green
the enthusiast is smarter than you

Waitress giving Elaine her meal at Monk's.
Waitress: Careful, this plate is extremely hot.
Elaine touching the plate.
Elaine: Thank you. Ow!
Waitress: I just told you it was hot. Why'd you touch it?
Elaine: I just wanted to know what your idea of 'hot' is.

It pains me to say it, but:

I agree with Nitmos. And in the same snarky tone, too.

Shoes, or gradual acclimation and quicker cadence.

Or sandals.
