Flashback Friday: Signed, Sealed, Determined

There's no turning back now. My wallet has spoken for me. Yesterday, I finally registered for the Akron Marathon and Buckeye Half Marathon.

The Buckeye Half Marathon used to be two weeks before Akron. Now it's four weeks prior. That puts the race right smack in the middle of my peak mileage for marathon training, between two 50-mile weeks. That doesn't diminish my determination to set a new PR.

I've always used the Buckeye Half as a tuneup for the marathon. Last year, I went a step further and sacrificed a PR by testing my marathon pacing strategy. At the end of 2009, I had set new best marks at every distance but the half marathon. Things will be different this year.

Personal Records to beat:
I'm through with trying for anything less than my best. Go big or go home.

Back Talk
Wherein the readers' comments include the word "wherein."

Nitmos won't be influenced to barefoot: "Nope, don't see the fascination with this fad. You'll enjoy my upcoming post wherein I compare the barefoot boom to disco."

Answer: It seems platform shoes are one of the main arguments of the barefoot vs. shod running debate.

Speaking of influences, Running Through Phoenix thinks my hydration choices could play a part in my poorly adhered-to schedule: "Long run completion is critical. Weekly mileage is third. Holding second in order of importance is quality of and variety in shorter runs. It might be possible that your energy beverage of choice is a negative influence.

Answer: Blasphemy! Off with your soles!

Happy Hour is nearly upon us, teammates. Have a finely brewed weekend. The Enthusiast and I are celebrating two years of [censored activities]. Run well and drink well. Cheers!

Random thought. My half marathon PR, just a few seconds slower than yours, was achieved during a training run where I ran six miles prior to the actual race. Go figure.

I wish you well in your training for these races. Make sure to wear your moisture wicking leisure suit.

Losing money on races I preregister for is one of the primary motivators for my going to them. You're locked in now.

Drink well? My friend, this is where I'm heading shortly: Summer Beer Festival

Sláinte!

I have that same half as a warm-up before a marathon issue this year, and it's forcing me to find a new half.

Also, I agree--go big or go home (and cry where you can't be seen).

Good luck on that PR pursuit.

Happy anniversary - hope you have some appropriate beverages with which to celebrate.

Um, I clicked on your Akron link to go to the Akron website. WHEN IS IT? LOL

Congrats on two years! That is so sweet! You're becoming a softie!!

Half Marathon - 8:00/mile pace
Marathon - 9:00/mile pace

That's two PRs and totally doable - a month to recover after that half is plenty of time to be ready for the big one.
