Positive Temperature = Negative Split

I was starting to get the stir-crazies. An arctic freeze kept me immobile for five days until it finally climbed into the mid-20s on Sunday. I strapped on my YakTrax and headed over to Sand Run park for six miles.

The first mile felt abusive, too many days off. I slowly found my rhythm and hit the three-mile mark at 32 minutes and some change. Near the halfway point, I thought I passed Martini going the other direction. I turned around and kicked into 9:30 pace to try and catch him.

I closed within a quarter-mile, but I couldn't catch the runner who may or may not have been Martini. However, the extra motivation helped me finish strong at an hour and 51 seconds for a three-minute negative split.

I'm paying for the strong effort this morning. My muscles ache, and my left inner thigh has some nice chaffage.

This week we might actually see 30 degrees. How exciting. I'd like to get in 20 miles.

DRUNKEN UPDATE -- 2:54 P.M. -- Gchat with Martini:
Viper: Was that you yesterday?
Martini: Yeah, was that you?

Surprisingly, I've discovered that I actually enjoy running in the cold! Nice run.

So sad when positive temps = heatwaves around here.

Glad you could get out for the 6 miler, but those temps are still awful!

I"ve come to enjoy running in the cold too, but it's got to be above zero. I'm not lacing up in anything below that! Glad you were able to get out there!

That sounds a bit Tyler Durden-esque. I think this proves that Martini is just a figment of your imagination. He is the one who goads you into stuff like the summer solstice challenge, no?

His name is Robert Paulson.

Everything is abusive in the beginning, if it involves being outside at this time of year. Great negative split though! I wonder what Nitmos will have to say on the subject...

You know it's bad when you get excited about the temps being in the 20's. Sigh.
