So Now What?

Last night, I was a good recovering marathoner. I really felt the urge to run, but I decided I'd put my joints through enough these past two weeks. Instead, I did some low-impact cross training to flush out the lactic acid before watching the Cleveland Browns mangle the former best team in the NFL. (Booyah!) Today, I feel surprisingly refreshed.

Now that I've got that marathon PR bug out of my system, I'm feeling directionless. I need a new challenge. Of course, I'm planning to race at least one more time to complete the chore that is Vanilla's Shave Your 5-K Challenge. But I need more than that silly drivel to keep me going through the year and into 2009.

Hide and Seek
First, I must find a 5-K so I can win that challenge. I already shaved two minutes off my 25:37 stubble time, but I need to get back to the track. The last time I ran intervals was a month ago. I need to wake up my fast-twitch muscles with some Yasso 800s.

So far, I've found only two 5-Ks in the area -- Nov. 23 and Nov. 27. Both are a bit of a drive. But unless something more convenient appears out of the racing abyss, one of these will have to suffice. But neither will keep me motivated for long. But I think perhaps I have one more PR in me.

We're Going Streaking!

Various runners over the past couple years have gone streaking, and I'm fond of streaks myself. Not necessarily running around with my danglies exposed, mind you, but I've done some other streaking. For instance, I once decided to go on a drinking streak, making it 30-some consecutive days slightly soused. And though I despise the Yankees, I've always thought Joe DiMaggio's 56-game hitting streak in 1941 was one of the cooler records in baseball history. (I also like that it ended in Cleveland.) Perhaps I should attempt my own running streak.

The Six-Minute Mile
This might be my most preposterous idea for a personal challenge. I have never, ever even sniffed a six-minute mile. Not at a race. Not at the track. Not ever. The closest I've come is a 6:52 mile pace during an 800-meter interval. (My fastest mile to date is 7:16, which I logged during my puketastic 10-K in July.) Perhaps this new ludicrous speed should be my goal to finish the year.

Or perhaps, I'll go for the trifecta. Why not?

I like the 6 minute mile idea. I am always eager to know how fast I could run a mile but... I am always "scheduled" to run way more than a mile (or not at all) so my splits are obviously never at my fastest speed. But if I knew that I only had to run for 6 minutes, nothing more, I could probably bust out some speed... though I don't think I'd hit a mile until like 6:50... maybe... on a very good day. Go for it.

Maybe there is another marathon in a couple of weeks? You are on a roll now. May as well attempt to keep PR'ing marathons every two weeks to see how long you can extend THAT streak.

I'm with Nitmos... do another marathon and join the Maniacs! Chia's doing it too.

Go for the 6 minute mile or another marathon.

I tried the running streak once and I'd much rather do the drinking streak, thankyouverymuch!

I'm loving the girls' conversation in the car.

A class. As if!

I personally think you need a streak. You do.

Hey, how about rooting for the Dodgers so I don't have to wait ANOTHER 20 years.

Good Lord.

I streaked in college once. I had to have a shot of tequila (OK, two) before I did it, but I did it.

Ya know, you & I could go head to head in the November 27 5K since I'll probably be my my parents' in Chesterland. I need to shave my 5K stubble time. Mine's 23:19. What's yours? OOOOHHHHH...Burn, baby burn!

ROFLMAO at Nitmos!

Oy, I've gotta get my butt in gear and roll with the Shave Your 5k as well. I am SO in the positive. At least you're already in the negative LOL

Streaking is overrated. If you're not going to abuse your body with another marathon, I vote for the 6 minute mile. A much faster way to go, in all respects.

Sarah... got a picture to prove it?? Just kidding !!! I'd thought it was Viper in the video doing the streaking. I didn't have my glasses on and it apparently was Will Farrel.

Oh, BTW, Viper, there is a race in Aurora (at the outlet place on Chillicothe) on Thanksgiving Day: Aurora Turkey Trot. It's a four-mile race, though, so I don't know if it fits your criteria.
