Flashback Friday: 'Totally Meta, Dude'

Silence. Maybe it had to do with the herd of winter brews I picked up last Friday for a little soiree. You know Dasher and Dancer and Prancer and Vixen, Cupid and Comet and Donner and Blitzen. Yes, you certainly know Blitzen. And I've hitched my sleigh to a fridgeful of beers that will get you Blitzened in no time.

There is, of course, Great Lakes Christmas Ale, a fixture in these parts. We tend to drink until we're sick of it. Or until we're just plain sick. It weighs in at 7.5 percent ABV, which isn't the most potent of beers I've drunk. The reason why you should hide your keys while drinking it is how easily flows into your gullet. You knock down four in quick succession, and you're a mess.

I also searched the great northwest and returned with Santa's Private Reserve from Rogue Brewery. This is hoppier that most winter beers I've had, but the malts balance the flavor nicely. However, it didn't play well with the others in the herd. It wants to be drunk alone.

[Drunkard's note: You want to talk about going Rogue? I lost a T-shirt, hat and one flip-flop while kayaking down the Rogue River in Oregon, for which the brewery is named. I flipped my inflatable kayak at the convergence of three rapids.]

Finally, from just across town, I grabbed 12 Dogs of Christmas Ale from Thirsty Dog Brewery. This may be my new favorite for the season. It packs 8.3 percent ABV and is heavier in flavor (almost like a stout) than the previous two beers mentioned. If I find any stray six-packs, I'm bringing them home.

Back Talk
Wherein we look back on a week that wasn't.

Xenia perhaps wonders if I wasn't so seen and done got slain: "So does the blog silence mean this week's Flashback Friday is going to be a blank post? Totally meta, dude."

Answer: Totally.

Happy Hour can't come soon enough, teammates. Have a finely brewed weekend. Run well and drink well. Beaujolais!

P.S., O-H!

I have to say it even though I know we're going to get crushed this year, but GO BLUE!

I'm spending all day tomorrow in the company of my new best friends, the hashers, freely roaming Ann Arbor in search of as much beer as we can drink. It promises to be one hell of a day.

Sláinte!

Santa's Private Reserve and I have a lot in common. I too like to be drunk alone.

I hope you have a great weekend. This is where I glaze over the beer things, cuz I have, like, no frame of reference, except that a 6pk of Coors cost $2.12 in 1979.

Really.
